The use of underarm crutches is straightforward once you practice a few careful steps. Below are some guidelines to walk correctly with one or two underarm crutches:
- The first step is to position the crutches under your arms and grip the handles with your hands; then, place the crutches in front of you.
- The top of the crutches should be approximately two fingers below your armpits, with your weight supported by your hands.
- If you have an injured leg, avoid placing it on the ground by bending the knee at all times.
- Lift the crutches and move them one step forward, slide the injured leg between the crutches and slowly shift your body forward, taking a step with the uninjured leg. Weight transfer onto the crutches should always be supported by your arms and the uninjured limb.
