Below, we outline as an indicative guide the four stages at which pressure ulcers develop and for which the viscoelastic cushion is recommended, particularly in the early stages to prevent the ulcers from increasing in size and severity.
- Grade I: These are the simplest to treat; their appearance is confirmed if the dark or reddened area on the skin does not disappear 30 seconds after pressure is relieved. It is necessary to change position, apply creams and massage to promote circulation.
- Grade II: Presents as a blister, wound or erosion, which may be closed or open. There is damage to the dermis and prompt wound care is required to avoid infections. Constant positional change is advised.
- Grade III: The wounds are deeper, and the tissue may be necrotic, losing skin and extending into the fatty layer. Pus discharge may occur, so it is essential to prevent the spread of infection.
- Grade IV: This is the most severe stage, where the wound appears crater-like and may extend to the muscles, tendons or even the bone. It is characterised by significant pain and loss of strength.
Viscoelastic coccyx cushions are also indicated for postpartum women or for individuals with haemorrhoid issues, fistulas or any other related complications, such as those arising from lumbar or cervical problems.
